Dr. Amy Koza Au.D., RAUD, RHIP Doctor of Audiology/Owner NexGen Hearing Squamish, BC Watch Gerry’s story We don’t realize that we’re losing our hear- ing, it’s so subtle. The sound of the powder snow on your skis is there constantly. It’s surprising, when you ski without sound you don’t have the same control, you don’t hear the sounds associated with where your skis are. I simply can’t ski as well, with- out my hearing aids! As an Air Traffic Controller, my career was dependent on maintaining perfect hear- ing, however the blast of high frequency sounds through my headsets deteriorated my hearing over time. After all, like the brakes on your car, your sense of hearing isn’t necessarily missed until you need it. Communication is the most important thing in life. You communicate every day. But I can’t do that if I can’t hear. No one can. When you withdraw, you’re left out in the quiet. Losing our ability to communicate would be a tragedy. When I canoe I want to be able to hear the ripple of the water on my canoe. When I ski, I want to hear the swoosh of the snow on my skis. When I’m in a crowd, I want to be part of it. I haven’t got any time to waste, I want to hear everything. I couldn’t do it without NexGen Hearing! Originally from Barrie, Ontario, after training in Australia for my Masters of Audiology, I decided to settle down in Squamish, BC. With a love of travel and adventure, the Sea-to-Sky community is the perfect place for me to call home. After starting the clinic in 2012, my passion for ongoing development and growth led me to enroll in the Doctor of Audiology (AUD) program via A.T. Still University. Education is amazing; coming to work every day with new current knowledge enables me to be the best clinician I can. I enjoy skiing, mountain biking and climbing in my spare time, in what really feels like my backyard. The energy I derive from my outdoor activities gives me even more enthusiasm for education and helping my patients return to the world of hearing. It is incredible to see the effects of hearing ricochet through my patients’ social, sport, family, and work well-being. I look forward to building a relationship with each and every patient!
